Sustainability and care for the environment are also making their way into amateur cycling. The Desafío 10 Picos Sierra de Espadán and Global Omnium, through Tuawa, have joined forces to reduce the carbon footprint in the III Edition of the race organised by the cyclist Ángel Casero and his team, which will be held on 22 April in Onda. Thanks to this union, ‘La 10 Picos’ will replace the usual plastic water bottles with Tuawa filtered water fountains, both at the four refreshment points and at the finish line.
In its first two editions, the more than 500 participants of the Desafío 10 Picos Sierra de Espadán consumed around 4,000 bottles of water in each edition. A figure that this year will be reduced to zero thanks to the installation of the Tuawa filtered water fountains. In this way, at each of the four refreshment points located in Torralba del Pinar (x2), Torrechiva and Matet; as well as at the finish line in Onda, cyclists will have at their disposal glass bottles and recycled cardboard cups to refill from the Tuawa filtered water fountains.
This agreement reinforces the commitment of Ángel Casero and his team to sustainability, after the cyclist made La Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana the first international event to have its carbon footprint officially certified by AENOR, in accordance with the ISO14064 international standard.
“We think it is essential that cycling, sustainability and environmental protection go hand in hand”, says Valencian cyclist Ángel Casero. “I believe that our sport must have a special respect for the environment that surrounds us. If we want to continue to enjoy routes and places as spectacular as the Sierra de Espadán, we must be committed to caring for the environment and sustainability. That is why we are delighted to extend to ‘La 10 Picos’ the collaboration we already had with Global Omnium and Tuawa in the VCV 2023”, says Casero.
The III Desafío 10 Picos Sierra de Espadán will be held next Saturday 22nd April and will count with the presence of the Basque cyclist Iban Mayo as ambassador. At the moment, the event already has more than 500 registered participants, although it hopes to reach 600 before the closing date for registration on 19 April. In its 3rd edition, the cyclotourist march offers two routes, 79.5 and 138.2 kilometres respectively, starting and finishing in the town of Onda in Castellón.
